Females ages are 4 times more likely than the general population to be victims of rape, attempted rape, or sexual assault. More than high school students have already experienced some form of physical aggression from a dating partner. Physical abuse is the non-accidental physical trauma or injury inflicted by one individual on another.
Biological evidence with forensic interest may be found in several cases of assault, being particularly relevant if sexually related. Sexual assault cases are characterized by low rates of disclosure, reporting, prosecution, and conviction. Biological evidence is sometimes the only way to prove the occurrence of sexual contact and to identify the perpetrator. The major focus of this review is to propose practical approaches and guidelines to help health, forensic, and law enforcement professionals to deal with biological evidence for DNA analysis.
When dealing with sexual assaults, the investigator usually has a living victim who can provide the investigator with information which will help in collecting and preserving the pertinent evidence. The investigator should glean as much information as possible, so he or she will know which evidence to collect. For example, if the victim tells the investigator which in this case may be the examining physician that no oral penetration occurred, then the investigator knows that no oral swabs will need to be taken.

Most people surveyed had no idea how many women were raped every year in the UK. Another third are lost when the victim later withdraws from a case for fear either of being disbelieved or of the criminal justice system or court process.
